Fenway Park Preservation Proposal

Howard Decker led the design team which produced a plan for a renovated Fenway Park that requires a relatively minimal amount of changes to the park. These alterations will significantly enhance the ballpark through the installation of more comfortable seats, improved circulation around the grandstand, additional concession space, and increased roof seating capacity.

The Preservation design team proposes eliminating the unsuccessful 600 Club, and the creation of a new, year-round club behind and above the bleachers, with great views of the field in every season. This new club will be integrated into a proposed new Team Annex building -- located in the triangle formed by the ballpark and Ipswich and Lansdowne Streets -- that will provide space for substantial enhancement to Fenway operations. This building would contain a team parking garage, and house many of the team's administrative, training, and ballpark service operations.

All of this could be completed while protecting Fenway Park's most significant historic features. This is an important component of the plan, for it appears that the ballpark could qualify for National Historic Landmark status, making renovation work eligible for a substantial federal tax incentive that would reduce the overall costs of the project.

The Preservation Proposal would provide the Red Sox with a facility seating capacity between 33,600 and 37,000, including 2,700 club seats and 75 luxury boxes. Preliminary cost estimates for this proposal range between $165 million and $180 million. The implementation of this plan will cause no interruption to the baseball season at Fenway Park, as all of the work could be conducted in a number of phases over the course of a few off-seasons.
